Sorting by colors with crayons....

Sorting is a skill that I really try to work into their preschool day very early. I always start with 1 attribute and color is one of the easiest. I hope to progress soon into sorting by 2 attributes like color and shape (which will be practiced after we return from Labor Day weekend, when patterns are introduced!)
Today we sorted AGAIN, but this time we sorted using our fine motor muscles. We used tongs to "chomp" an item and find the matching crayon! I am so excited how many "strong Octopus finger muscles" we already have....for the children that struggled with "chomping" an item, they will have continued practice in the sensory table. The sensory table currently has noodles, and pipe cleaners for lacing (another great fine motor skill) however now that tongs have been introduced, those will be added to the sensory table along with pom poms for extra practice sorting and "chomping."

Ginger Dunlap our Occupational therapist is wonderful, and to support her I try and use the same language that she introduces. Monday she worked on using "chomper fingers" when completing the yellow school bus. The song that we sing is "The alligator chompers go chomp, chomp, chomp. chomp, chomp, chomp. chomp, chomp, chomp. The alligator chompers go chomp, chomp, chomp. chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp (kiss sound)." This is the to the tune of the "Wheels on the bus."
