What do you need for a snowman?

Invented spelling, list making, and all the things you need for a snowman and more :)

Reading Challenge

The reading challenge was a huge success! The children got to watch many of our favorite books come to life on a huge screen while enjoying popcorn and juice. Such a fun way to celebrate our love for reading!

Polar Bear Polar Bear What do you hear?

The children created Polar Bears to connect back to one of the books we read, "Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?"
This was a project that really took a lot of focus, in order to see the size of the shapes needed, and how they would fit to create a tanagram polar bear!

What do you need for a snowman?

Today we created snowmen! We listened to a story "All You Need For A Snowman," and then created our own.
The children had to cut 3 snowballs, glue it onto the paper, and then decorate with all the things a snowman might need.
We are in the process of creating a list (children writing) and that will be finished tomorrow (posting soon)

Week of the mitten

Winter time theme brings along one of my most favorite books, "The Mitten," by Jan Brett and many activities to support it.
We made matching mittens (painted one side, and pressed the other side to create symmetry), lacing a mitten and story retell with their own mini mittens, acting out the story with masks and props, and our journal activity: My mitten is so big _______ could fit inside! Many different things were drawn to fit inside the mittens from dinosaurs, oranges, pizza, their families, and even Octopi!

SNOW much fun

With the snow falling outside, we can not go out to play; so why not bring it in....
Snow in the sensory table is the perfect fit for our winter wonderland theme
Freezing hands, and even the sneak of a taste-the snow was a hit

Winter wonderland

I am not a fan of the season, I am more of a summer girl, but this is one of my most favorite themes to plan, and explore within.
So many things happening in the octopus room for the month of January!
We will:
-ice skate, ice fish, build a snowman, snowball toss, enjoy hot coco, and roast marshmallows in dramatic play
-use our sense of sight to find the snowmen, melted vs. frozen, and summer vs. winter clothing
-Math involves the teen numbers: number match, buttons on the snowman, roll and build
-practicing our phone number
-Learning about the letters: J, I, W, and D
-I spy with the letters and number (flash light onto the letter or number on the wall)
-lots of journal writing; this class is amazing with the knowledge they have (mitten, weather window, scoop of ages
-measuring with how many gingerbread men tall we are

We will continue learning about fiction and non fiction with our study on penguins! Our four stories are some of my favorites: The Mitten, The Hat, The Snowy Day, and Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?
