pumpkin pumpkin pumpkin

To end our theme of fall, farm, and fire safety we had to carve a pumpkin! We had been learning about the parts of the pumpkin in our science center (pulp, seeds, stem, and ribs), playing with pumpkins in dramatic play, and creating art projects about pumpkins.
We removed the pulp and seeds (some of their faces were so funny), then voted as a class what eyes, nose, and mouth our pumpkin would have. It was such a fun day!

Fire Safety week

We are learning all about fire safety this week:
-what number to call when there is a fire
-when you can call a fire fighter
-what to do when there is a fire
-stop drop and roll

We have been dressing up as fire fighters in dramatic play, spraying a burning building to keep our classroom safe. During academic choice this week, we will rip and tear paper to fill the number 911, color a fire fighter picture, and make a fire truck you can eat!

Apples, apples up on top!

This week our focus has been on many things, one in particular was apples! We ended the week by getting to taste 3 kinds of apples: red, green, and yellow.
The children rated the apples with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and gave descriptions like juicy, sweet, and sour. We wanted to remember our favorite color apple, so we glued that into our journals, then graphed our favorite apple as a class!

Farm fun

Fall farm and fire safety

We have officially switched themes! It is fall, farm, and fire safety in the Octopus room. Prior to our theme change the children helped generate a list to participate in shared writing (teacher writes, children dictate) about what should be in our room for the next theme. The children also changed out all puzzles, and tub toys in order to ensure high level of interest and engagement within the environment. We will be learning many things during this theme:
-letters B, F, P
-non fiction study about spiders
-farm animals: pig, cow, horse, sheep, duck
-pumpkins (parts of the pumpkin, size ordering, carving a pumpkin, and a shape face)
-apples (we will taste 3 apples, graph our favorite, and put our personal favorite in our journal)
-mommy and baby matching
-fire safety (stop drop and roll)
-fire truck we can eat
-pumpkin patterns
-pumpkin seed counting
-acting out Mrs. Wishy Washy
-class books: In went the Octopus Class (Mrs. Wishy Washy) and 10 apples up on top
